My Biography

Philippa Graff’s paintings have a tactile quality.
The works are characterized by their textured surfaces,
on which she applies expressive mark-making and painterly brushstrokes.

Her keen sense of colour is evident throughout her work,
which depicts abstract images of nature. Also includes the climate and awareness of vulnerability of the planet.

Philippa was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1959.
Her reverence for nature is rooted in her having spent her childhood surrounded by trees and forests.

She sought refuge from the sun in her shady garden, becoming fascinated with shadow, filtered light and the
forest floor. These elements, coupled with an awareness of modernization and urbanization of the city
became an integral part of her aesthetic. She created layers and layers of paint that represented the transparencies seen in water and nature in general.
